Obedience Classes

Puppy Intermediate Class:
Puppies up to six months of age

For GSD puppies that have passed their Kennel Club Puppy Foundation test and are less than six months old.  The handler and their puppy will progress to Class One when the relevant Instructors feel they are both ready to do so, and the puppy is over six months old.  No test is required for progression to Class One.  Leads are never removed during training in this class unless replaced by a long line.

Training includes:

  • Socialisation/habituation.
  • Focus and loose lead walking.
  • Introduction to basic cues.
  • Control at gate/door.
  • Basic heelwork including basic turns, and the "sit", "stand" and "down" positions.
  • Food manners.
  • Gentle examination of the dog by the handler and by people other than the handler.
  • Leave it/wait.
  • Introduction to recall.
  • Temperament test.
  • Vehicle control.
  • Collar hold/pat the puppy.
  • Other issues the Handler requires assistance with relevant to the level of the class.

Intermediate Class - Dogs over six months of age

For any GSD that is at least six months old and deemed mature enough (if not, they will be referred to Puppy Intermediate Class) and the handler/dog have specific issues they wish to work on.  They will progress to Class One when the relevant Instructors feel they are ready to do so.  No test is required for progression to Class One.  Leads are never removed during training in this class unless replaced by a long line.

Class One

This Class is for GSDs that are at least six months old, are deemed mature enough by the Class Instructor and the puppy's handler has the necessary training experience.  Here you will be given the basic tools and knowledge to start to train and develop your dog to a good basic standard.  Leads are never removed in this class unless replaced by a long line.

Training includes:

  • Heel on lead including all turns (excluding coupled turns).
  • Sits, downs and stands.
  • Sit-Stay to Class One test standard (on lead, lead to be dropped when a Handler leaves a dog to facilitate capture should the dog decide to run off).
  • Down-Stay to Class One test standard (on lead, lead to be dropped when a Handler leaves a dog to facilitate capture should the dog decide to run off).
  • Introduction to Recall (five paces away, no formal "sit" or "finish/round to heel" required (on lead, lead to be dropped when a Handler leaves the dog to facilitate capture should the dog decide to run off).
  • Temperament test.
  • Collar hold/pat the puppy.
  • Basic introduction Class Two exercises.

 

Class Two

For Handlers and their dogs that have passed the Progression Test from Class One to Class Two.  Class Two is designed to stretch your basic skills and encourage you to have more faith in the things that you have achieved in Class One.

Training includes:

  • Heel on lead (all turns including: "about turn, right turn" and "left about turn, left turn" (but excluding "diagonal" turns).
  • Introduction to off lead heelwork (all turns including: "about turn, right turn" and "left about turn, left turn" (but excluding "diagonal turns").
  • Sit-Stay to Class Two test standard.
  • Down-Stay to Class Two test standard.
  • Full Novice Recall.
  • Introduction to Retrieve (introduction to "hold", "give" and "fetch").
  • Introduction to different paces of heelwork.
  • Simple Agility.
  • Introduction to Distant Control.
  • Temperament test.
  • Basic introduction to Class Three exercises.

 

 

Class Three

For Handlers and their dogs that have passed their Progression Test to Class Three.  Class Three is designed to cover even more advanced training to a much higher standard.  The bond with your dog is paramount, as the work you do with your dog will be testing, but fun.  The work in this Class is often off lead which in itself requires total concentration, timing, trust, and confidence.  Again, you will be trained to handle your dog with care and kindness.

Training includes:

  • Heelwork on lead including all turns to Obedience "A" Standard (all turns including: "right turn, diagonal" and "left turn, diagonal").
  • Heelwork off lead including all turns to Obedience "A" Standard (all turns excluding: "right turn, diagonal" and "left turn, diagonal").
  • Sit-Stay two minutes.
  • Down-Stay two minutes.
  • Stand-Stay one minute.
  • Class "A" Recall (off lead, walking away from dog, dog called to heel while walking away.  Halt when instructed with dog in "Sit" at heel).
  • Full Retrieve (sit, wait, retrieve, present and finish).
  • Introduction to Scent exercises.
  • Introduction to Send Away.
  • Introduction to simple Agility, at Instructor's discretion.
  • Distant Control.
  • Temperament test.

Class Four

For Handlers and their dogs that have passed their Progression Test to Class Four.  In Class Four you will be able to control your dog, both on and off lead, regardless of any distractions, encouraging all of your dog's natural instincts and using them to your advantage.

 

Training includes:

  • Advanced heelwork.
  • Stays, Handler out of sight.
  • Scent work.
  • Extended Retrieve.
  • Distant control.
  • Send Away.
  • Any other training for competition work.
